The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) currently has 28 member countries and more than 110 independent research groups covering a wide spectrum of molecular biology in six cities in Europe. How is science communicated at EMBL?

Students at Charles University’s medical faculties wasted little time pooling their strengths in the face of the emerging crisis.

The 4EU+ university alliance, pooling the resources and talents of six public research universities (including Charles University) aims to revolutionise research and education.

Originally, she wanted to be a ballerina but 24-year-old Lucie Ledvinová, a fifth-year student at CU’s First Faculty of Medicine, choose field hockey cleats over pointe shoes. Ledvinová, who is with the top flight club SK Slavia Prague, has been playing the game since she was a pre-schooler.

The Centre for Knowledge and Technology Transfer at CU brings together students from different faculties . Interdisciplinary approaches can inspire new solutions. The centre hosted an event capping a new course called Innovation in Humanitarian Aid.

Held at the institute’s headquarters at Prague’s Výtoň and at the European Union’s Prague House in the city centre, the conference was described as a key event by ÚJOP deputy director Dr. Dana Hůlková Nývltová when I met with her on the conference’s final day.

“At Kampus Hybernská we are offering all Charles University faculties and components a common space to meet each other as well as city partners or others in the application sphere,” says Marcel Kraus, project manager of Hyb4City since January of this year.

“It’s not so much about gaining knowledge. For me it’s mainly about participants outperforming themselves. It’s an experiential course in which students are pushed beyond their comfort zones,” says Jan Veselý. He’s guiding a cohort of creative students – his sixth round already – and “toughening them up.”

Czechs have been marking 17 November, commemorating the courage of students and citizens who stood up to two different totalitarian regimes: against the Nazi oppressors in 1939 and the Communists 50 years later. Students, teachers and representatives of Charles University all took part.

Following the pandemic, Charles University students are once again helping in tough times, providing aid to Ukrainian refugees arriving in the country. “Their efforts are remarkable,” says Charles University Chancellor Michal Zima.

Particle Prague 2022 is a five-day event offering high school students a week in the world of particle physics, co-organised by the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. The event will be held in September but the deadline for registration is 30 April.

“I consider Charles University to be one of the best in the wider region, it can withstand comparison with the best in the world,” says Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová. The head-of-state met on Wednesday with students at Charles University.
