Student Shakil Reja Efti completed an Erasmus+ stay at CU. As a wheelchair user, he showed strength and humour facing unexpected challenges. His experience shows that while CU takes accessibility seriously, improvement is still needed.

Around 10% of the population suffers from Scheuermann's kyphosis and idiopathic scoliosis. Motivated by his own experience , student Tadeáš Řáha launched a campaign focused on early detection.

The Czech team won five medals at the Winter World University Games in Turin, Italy. Hockey players claimed gold, while biathletes Petr Hák and Svatava Mikysková secured silver in the relay. Three bronze medals were also earned.

Thirteen students from Charles University were among the Czech representatives at this year's Olympic Games in Paris. Although they didn’t finish on the podium, some came close and all made a mark!

Only the top 20 crews from 20 countries get to compete in yachting events at the Olympics. And Czechia is the only one without direct access to the sea. We were represented by Sára Tkadlecová and Zosia Burska, both from CU.

It’s no surprise windsurfing is a big sport in coastal countries, but it enjoys considerable popularity in landlocked Czechia. Kateřina Švíková, representing the Czech Republic at the Olympic Games in Paris, is proof.

CU student and Slavia Prague hockey player Jaroslav Brož had never had such a long break: not until the outbreak of Covid-19. As the country locked down in March, no one knew what would come next.

Lenka Štěrbová began swimming when she was four; 12 years later, she became the youngest Czech to swim the English Channel. Today, she dreams of taking on the Channel again but just a little later in her sports career. This time there and back.

Originally, she wanted to be a ballerina but 24-year-old Lucie Ledvinová, a fifth-year student at CU’s First Faculty of Medicine, choose field hockey cleats over pointe shoes. Ledvinová, who is with the top flight club SK Slavia Prague, has been playing the game since she was a pre-schooler.

Foreign students who have the chance to study at Charles University under the Erasmus+ program often describe their semester or two in Prague as “unforgettable”. Not only is Erasmus+ an opportunity to advance in one’s chosen major but it’s a chance to experience something different in the heart of Europe.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought out large numbers of volunteers across the country, offering help in a time of unprecedented crisis.

Where better to kick off the 2024/25 academic year than at the Kampus Hybernská cultural and educational centre? Upper-year students are already familiar with this creative hub, but for first-years, it was a truly UniKátní START (Unique Start) to the next phase in educational life.

The Centre for Knowledge and Technology Transfer at CU brings together students from different faculties . Interdisciplinary approaches can inspire new solutions. The centre hosted an event capping a new course called Innovation in Humanitarian Aid.

The protective gear alone is impressive but just wait until you witness two opponents go at each other. With fluid sword movements reminiscent of the ancient samurai, competitors shout and strike. Such is kendo. And such is a student of the Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Hradec Králové, Nikol Eichlerová. The European Champion.

“The era of superspecialists is coming to an end, the future belongs to graduates who can connect individual disciplines,” says biologist Jan Černý. That is why the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics agreed on a new Bachelor program called Science at CU.

“At Kampus Hybernská we are offering all Charles University faculties and components a common space to meet each other as well as city partners or others in the application sphere,” says Marcel Kraus, project manager of Hyb4City since January of this year.

“It’s not so much about gaining knowledge. For me it’s mainly about participants outperforming themselves. It’s an experiential course in which students are pushed beyond their comfort zones,” says Jan Veselý. He’s guiding a cohort of creative students – his sixth round already – and “toughening them up.”

Czechs have been marking 17 November, commemorating the courage of students and citizens who stood up to two different totalitarian regimes: against the Nazi oppressors in 1939 and the Communists 50 years later. Students, teachers and representatives of Charles University all took part.

The final Friday in September saw the return of Czech European Researchers' Night, where scientific and educational institutions across the Czech Republic open their doors to curious visitors. Charles University, of course, took part.

Thousands of people, including many students and staff, took part in a commemorative event at Charles University on Thursday, 4 January – fourteen days after an unprecedented tragedy unfolded at the Faculty of Arts.
