Biologist Petr Pyšek is the proud holder of the prestigious Czech Head award recognising his life’s work. He received the award in 2022 for the study of invasive organisms. “Invasive ecology is a field that examines how humans spread plants and animals around the world and guages their impact on nature,” he explains.

My guest is Petr Witz, a Postdoc researcher from the Dept. of Public and Social Policy at the Institute of Sociological Studies at CU. As a researcher, Witz worked with the largest cross-border infrastructure project in Europe - the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link.

Kateřina Chládková is one of the few researchers in the world who study the earliest stages of language acquisition, which means she is often in contact with babies – even in the maternity ward. Her aim is to find out how we learn to speak from the very first moments of life.

In jest, he says that a recent Amazon exhibition in Prague’s Carolinum came together only by accident, after he came across a box containing Peru’s highest state honour while cleaning up. Back in 2007, Charles University’s Bohumír Janský became the first foreigner to receive the honour.

In 1990, he became the first ever Czech Minister of the Environment and was a member of the Czech National Council and a senator. Professor Bedřich Moldan was also the founder of the Centre for Environmental Issues of Charles University.

"I enjoy finding the essence of biological processes," says Lenka Hálová, a graduate of Charles University who has been based in Manchester for fifteen years. Her research focuses on the regulation of the cell cycle, the disruption of which leads, for example, to cancer. Among other things, she is very active in the non-profit organization Czech School & Community in Manchester.

Tracy Okine, an American Ph.D. student and Fulbright scholar,  began her scientific and cultural exchange in the Czech Republic in January of this year, in the midst of the third wave. In Forum, she writes about what inspired her to conduct research in Prague.

Ten Czech scientists, in two main categories, received Neuron Awards on Tuesday at a gala ceremony at Prague’s National Museum. Three received the award for their lifelong contribution to science, while seven awards went to young researchers. Eight recipients have ties with, or work at, Charles University.

Thomas F. Babor is a renowned researcher and professor of Public Health Studies at the University of Connecticut and author of more than 15 books. In the late 1980s, Prof. Babor was one of the main scientists involved in the creation of AUDIT for WHO. This week he received an honorary degree from Charles University.

Charles University is hosting the 4EU+ Migration and Health Days, a highly-anticipated conference bringing together not only representatives of the university alliance but also key experts, policymakers, UN, WHO and NGO representatives.
