Nine finalists provided unique insights into the fascinating world of natural sciences—that was the FameLab 2024 final in a nutshell. The culmination of the national competition, held under the patronage of the British Embassy in Prague.

Are collective commitments within military alliances such as NATO being upheld, or do the representatives of the countries decide based on public opinion? CU's Michal Smetana clinched an ERC grant to try and answer the question.

"Our long-term research is devoted to the development of new technologies for the screening of pregnancy complications during the first trimester," says Ilona Hromadníková, a physician/scientist from the Third Faculty of Medicine.

“Realistic expectations are necessary when applying for an ERC grant but there's no point in being overly modest,” says Pavel Veselý from the Institute of Informatics, CU. The researcher was awarded a prestigious ERC CZ grant in June.

A total of 26 Czech scientists, students or representatives of non-governmental organizations have succeeded in the prestigious competition for the Fulbright Scholarship. Among them are nine colleagues from Charles University.

In Talking Economics, we discuss labour markets in developing countries with Andreas Menzel, an Associate Professor at CERGE-EI. Andreas’s research projects focus on development economics with fieldwork in Ghana, Tanzania, and Bangladesh.

In 1990, he became the first ever Czech Minister of the Environment and was a member of the Czech National Council and a senator. Professor Bedřich Moldan was also the founder of the Centre for Environmental Issues of Charles University.

It’s quite common for international students to work during their studies. But remote jobs or foreign language tutoring aren’t the only options. Especially for PhD candidates who just embarked on their journey into the academic realm. One such example is our student Adel Petrovic. 

Representatives of the eight prestigious universities that make up the 4EU+ Alliance met over two days at CU this week to chart the course for the coming decade. CU, as one of the founding members, was a fitting venue for a meeting on the newest goals.

“In addition to research, I also work in a pharmacy, and often hear from elderly patients how hard some medical tablets are for them to swallow. That is why I focused on developing tablets that disperse in the mouth,” says Thao Tranová, a postgraduate student at Charles University.

Economist Paul Robert Milgrom's work has significantly influenced many areas of modern economics. He transformed the world of auctions for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize. He has now received the honorary title of doctor honoris causa at CU.

It is among 20 research projects newly supported by Charles University. A unique University Centre for Conflict and Post-Conflict Studies in Central Europe has been established at the Faculty of Law under the leadership of Professor Veronika Bílková.

The University of Manchester is Europe’s top university for its social and environmental impact in the most recent the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings and the QS Sustainability Ranking. Julian Skyrme, the university’s Director of Social Responsibility, is the driving force behind its strategy. 

It has been almost two years since the Russian attack on Ukraine began at dawn on 24 February 2022. Ahead of the sombre anniversary, Forum reports on the work of Ukrainian scientists and scholars at Charles University.

She is an internationally recognised Czech scientist and recently became the first woman to receive the Czech Head Award. Professor Zuzana Moťovská received the government’s top scientific prize for 2023 for her outstanding contribution to the field of cardiology.

Charles University recently outlined the scope of a major research project. Beyond security: The role of conflict in building resilience will bring together studies by numerous participants, across disciplines, to examine the impact of crises.

“I have twenty kids in each classroom that I can influence, inspire, or teach critical thinking. I teach multiple classes and I have an impact on many children’s lives. That’s the beauty of the teaching profession,” says Daniel Pražak, a teacher, education populariser, and PhD student at CU.

Charles University on Friday jointly launched a new Supply Chain Resilience Center together with the National Chengchi University in Taiwan. The centre is part of a multifaceted project that will research the stability of supply chains and more.

"We previously described rapid auxin speciation in the root of a model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Now we want to focus on this in other parts of plants, bringing us closer to practical applications," says Matyáš Fendrych from the Faculty of Science.

"Our goal is to understand the limits of what the vertebrate eye is capable of! By studying the eye of deep-sea fish, we can also learn many useful insights about the human eye" says CU's Zuzana Musilová  - awarded a prestigious ERC Consolidator grant.
