Med student and Bake Off winner shares the sweet side of life
“Baking is for me a feeling of happiness in difficult times, an opportunity for endless self-expression...,” says Vojtěch Vrtiška, pastry chef, calligraphy expert, and med student at the First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University.
She is an internationally recognised Czech scientist and recently became the first woman to receive the Czech Head Award. Professor Zuzana Moťovská received the government’s top scientific prize for 2023 for her outstanding contribution to the field of cardiology.

On Tuesday, 10 October, Charles University hosted an international Czech-American conference on the topic of "Value and Quality in Healthcare: Czech and American Perspectives." The event was co-organized by Lahey Hospital & Medical Center (LHMC).
“Doing science these days is generally quite stressful - you're constantly writing grants or explaining in evaluation reports why it's not working out the way you thought it would,” warns molecular geneticist Eva Froňková from the Second Medical Faculty of Charles University.
Loučka: Palliative care is a science like any other
The only certainty in our lives is its end. Yet we avoid the subject of dying as much as possible. “Palliative care is not just about the end of life. It is about living well for as long as possible, despite a serious illness,” says Martin Loučka, assistant professor at the Third Faculty of Medicine.
The field of nursing within the medical profession has grown ever more varied. While in the past, a “one-size-fits-all” approach was sufficient, that is no longer the case. “The shortage of nurses,” says Ivana Dvořáčková of Hradec Králové University Hospital, “would be eased if we relieved them of tasks which could go to less qualified professionals.”
The Czech Republic boasts 14 institutes of forensic medicine across the country; Prague alone is home to four. The Institute of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology of the First Medical Faculty of Charles University is the oldest. But with one of the youngest chief physicians: Klára Neureutterová.
Med student: Guiding at historic hospital taught me a lot
“Being a tour guide at the historic Kuks Hospital taught me a lot,” says Jaroslav Matějka, a third-year student at the Third Faculty of Medicine of Charles University. Above all, he credits it with teaching him how to communicate better with others.
Last Friday, saw the awarding of an extraordinary scholarship recognising the work and talents of international students studying at top Czech universities. The award is named after the late Miroslav Vlček – one of the main proponents of the Study in Prague programme.

Now, med student Markéta Malecová is a few months away from completing her studies and becoming a doctor herself. She has already made an impact, helping children at a very special hospital in Uganda.
Hematologist Jan Trka grew up in a family of teacher-scientists, so from an early age science was an integral part of life. Perhaps it is why he became the head of the scientific-diagnostic laboratory at Motol University Hospital and is now the vice-dean at CU’s Second Faculty of Medicine.
