Celebration of Advent at Charles University

The time of Advent at Charles University is traditionally celebrated by numerous Christmas concerts and other festive meetings of CU employees and students. The employees usually have a gathering within the institute or faculty they are working for; the latter mostly meet in one of the favourite student cafés or pubs close to their faculty building (as Czechs are lovers of beer, a pub is actually more likely than a café).

My memories of language lessons at school are along the same lines as my memories of “food technology” classes or girl's netball – characterised by a sense of confusion, an oddball teacher and the rhetorical question of “why exactly am I being made to do this”, as I learnt how Smartie cookies are made step-by-step on a production line or as I gallivanted round in one of those itchy pleated sports skirts, having a whistle periodically blown at me whilst my male classmates were allowed to charge and scream aimlessly in the mud for an hour.

At its meeting today, the Academic Senate of Charles University elected Professor Tomáš Zima as its candidate for the position of Rector of the University. The proposed candidate for the appointment shall be submitted by the Minister of Education to the President of the Czech Republic.

When a team of three researchers of the Institute of Classical Archaeology, CU FA set off for the Paschurt Valley, their initial plan was to inspect kurgans, funeral barrows typical of steppe cultures. A discovery they made in a nearby site meant a complete change of their plans. What they discovered was settlements dating back to the Iron and Bronze Ages, including a well-preserved irrigation system.

Why or Why Not Erasmus?

Making the decision to spend a year away from home to study at a university in another country is a big step for a student, but is a choice available to many thanks to the Erasmus programme which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The ability to study abroad not only means students can learn how education differs elsewhere but also enables them to experience different cultures as well as character-building that could shape a lifetime.

Irish and Bretonic Music

There are many languages spoken around Europe and the world, making it sometimes difficult for us to understand each other. Yet, there is one universal way of communication – music and dance. If the music is merry, we all feel it that way – and similarly, if the music is sad, it’s sad for everyone. This was why we were really happy when two of our Erasmus students, with whom we prepared this interview to the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Erasmus programme, decided to approach the children in four partner schools of the Europe Meets School programme of the Faculty of Arts in this clearly very universal way.

For twenty years now the Charles University Grant Agency has been helping talented scientists to cover the costs of their research. One of the projects to receive financial assistance was that of hydrobiologist Mgr. Petr Jan Juračka from the CU Faculty of Science and his colleagues from the , who are interested in the morphological description of water fleas (Daphnia).

The Erasmus Project celebrates its 30th year in 2017, and 2018 will be the 20th year of it operating in the Czech Republic. Ollie Heppenstall explores its history, impact and what the future might hold for this incredible organisation.
