Science at CU: Cybersecurity not just a tech field

"Cybersecurity is not just about technical knowledge, but includes a wide range of other disciplines, such as diplomacy, international law, international relations or psychology," explains Lucie Kadlecová in one minute, who returned to the Czech Republic after working abroad, where she is currently working on linking academia and practice.

"Cybersecurity today is no longer just about technical knowledge, but encompasses a wide range of other disciplines, such as diplomacy, international law, international relations or psychology," says Lucie Kadlecová from the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University, who likes to spread awareness on this topic and break down stereotypes that cybersecurity is only a technical field and the domain of men.

Lucie got into cybersecurity while studying at the Department of War Studies at King's College London or during a Fulbright scholarship at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

"I then went on to gain experience working for the Cyber Defence Section at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, for example, or working for the National Cyber Security Centre, which was the predecessor of today's NCSC," she says.

She is currently involved in bridging academia and practice and bringing cybersecurity and the non-technical aspects to students, including girls and women, because they are still few in cybersecurity and bring diversity to the whole field.

Among other things, her book on state sovereignty in cyberspace is out now from Stanford University Press.

Science at CU in one minute

The Science at Charles University series of short videos showcases the diversity of science at Charles University. In previous episodes, mathematician Erin Carson and teacher Daniel Pražák presented their research.

Where did filming take place?

For filming, we chose the newly renovated Jinonice campus, which was inaugurated at the end of April and houses several institutes and other parts of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University. The new building is also dominated by the faculty library. Throughout the complex there are 105 offices, five lecture halls (two of which have been newly built), 20 seminar rooms and a number of other specialised spaces, including the Faculty's Radio and Television Laboratory and Photo Laboratory (RTL). A new lounge area has also been added in the area of the former entrance to the building, next to which is a room dedicated to student societies. More in a separate article (in Czech only).
