As was reported in the international and domestic media, an unprecedented tragedy unfolded at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague in the afternoon hours of Thursday 21 December. Fourteen people - students and teachers - lost their lives and dozens more were injured, some of them seriously, in the worst mass shooting in the history of this country. We mourn the loss of life of members of our university community, and express our deepest condolences to all the bereaved. Our thoughts are with all those affected by the tragedy.
The management of the University together with the management of the Faculty of Arts, in cooperation with the security forces, immediately on Thursday began to deal with the situation and the crisis staff of the University was established. The university quickly set up help services for anyone in crisis at this difficult juncture. Memorial events were held on Friday and at the weekend. People came together to honour those who died and to express the hope that such a tragedy is never repeated.
