The new team is complete. On Monday 7 February, the team of the new rector of Charles University, Professor Milena Králíčková, met for the first time in the historic Carolinum’s Patriotic Hall. Králíčková was elected to head Charles University by the Academic Senate in October 2021 and then appointed by the Czech head of state at the end of January. “The very first board meeting addressed a number of specific points and challenges. I am pleased that we immediately started working as a team for the benefit of our academic community,” Rector Králíčková, the first woman to head Charles University since its founding in 1348, told Forum.

The 20-member top advisory board, meeting for the very first time, had a full 13-point agenda and its first official decisions to make, so that the meeting stretched into the late evening. An afternoon full of deliberations also included the awarding of official appointment decrees, presented by the new rectress. As is customary, the Rector Emeritus Tomáš Zima, who headed the university for the last eight years (until 31 January 2022), is also a member of the new Board.

On Monday, the Rector's Board (RB) covered a number of topics, including the nomination of candidates for prestigious research funding (Donatio Universitatis Carolinae), the agenda for the support of the university's foreign language study programmes and the related proposal of the Strategy for the Promotion of Charles University Abroad, as well as the staffing of the Council for Lifelong Learning of Charles University.
The board also addressed current tasks on the agenda: for example, the manner and form of the university's involvement in the preparations for the upcoming Czech EU Presidency or sustainable development at Charles University in 2022.
One rector, eight vice-rectors
How did esteemed participants rate the first meeting? “It was nice to hear and have mutual respect for each other’s opinions at the board's very first meeting and - only after a mutual discussion - to reach a consensus. II have to stress I am used to this from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and personally consider it to be a better process than some kind of directive procedure,” Associate Professor Martin Vlach, the new Vice-Rector of Charles University for Public Relations, said.
“Mutual communication not only between the members of the Rectress's Board, but also between the faculties and central departments could bring better and more stable results in the long term, based on joint activity and the interest of all involved,” he added. Vlach succeeded Egyptologist Miroslav Bárta in the public relations post.
In addition to the Monday’s first meeting, there was also an important photo opportunity for all the new vice-rectors and returning members of the board. “Ladies, hold that smile... and gentlemen, don’t forget to straighten your ties!” and similar instructions echoed down the corridor at the historic Carolinum and a little later in the Patriotic Hall as portraits were taken by Forum photographer Vladimír Šigut. The lensman also recorded the moments when the rector awarded decrees of appointment to the members of the new board.
