Jan Velinger

Studied film directing at FAMU in Prague and began in current affairs in commercial television in 1996. Worked as a reporter and presenter at the English service of Czech Radio for more than sixteen years, before joining Charles University’s media team in June 2018. He is responsible for the English edition of Forum Magazine and Forum Radio podcasts.

Professor Michael Grätzel, the celebrated chemist behind the invention of dye-sensitised solar cells, was recently awarded an honorary doctorate from CU. The accolade marks the 16th honorary degree in his distinguished career.

More than 160 researchers have received support through the ground-breaking Primus programme ( launched in 2017) enabling them to establish independent labs focused on innovative frontier research. 

A lost manuscript signed by none other than Charles IV, the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, was found during work on the historic Carolinum building. Archaeologists were stunned to discover that wellbeing was just as important then as today.

Forum Radio: Society and graphic design

Identita (or Identity) is a project that highlights both the past history and present of Czech graphic design. It was created by design experts Filip Blažek and Linda Kudrnovská (graduates of the Faculty of Arts at CU) who clinched a Czech Grand Design Award not long after our interview.

From poker to Google to the NYSE

First, they developed an AI that was the first in the world to beat the best professional poker players. Then, their DeepStack project, along with the implementation team, was acquired by Google. The dream of the CEO of EquiLibre is to run the best trading firm from Prague.

Experts from the Norwegian Centre for Violence and Traumatic Stress Studies have shared insights and the results of a key study on post-trauma aid. Cooperation between CU and NKVTS was initiated following the tragic events of 21 December 2023.

Věra Jourová is a new vice-rector at Charles University. In her first interview in this role since leaving the European Commission, the former EU official discusses the importance of CU making its voice properly heard in science, research, and education policy.

CU this week hosted a unique event bringing together students, staff, as well as 4EU+ Alliance reps for a special day at the Carolinum. The alliance has made significant strides in creating new opportunities in education, research, and mobility.

Kari Jussi Hemminki is a renowned researcher who has overseen ground-breaking work at the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen. In less than five years in this role, Professor Hemminki and his team published over 100 impactful publications.

“Our main goal is to produce a language model that will compete with existing models and, moreover, will work very well for all European languages,” says Professor Jan Hajič from the Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics at CU.

Forum Radio: The power of multilingualism

Kateřina Chládková is a highly respected researcher at the Institute of Czech Language and Theory of Communication at the Faculty of Arts, focusing on language acquisition, speech perception and production. She is our guest in Forum Radio.

“When I was in Ukraine, I came to realise that 'ordinary' human honesty is what saves lives,” says Milan Švrčina, a graduate of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. Švrčina was an active member of the International Legion in Ukraine. 

"Academics of the 20th century were personalities. We should be inspired by them and support originality and the search for one's own path, because it leads to knowledge and great ideas," says Libuše Heczková from the Faculty of Arts.

Connecting experts in flow cytometry, development and licensing of diagnostic methods, including in the field of leukaemia, are among the main tasks of the internationally successful EuroFlow consortium.

“I just wanted to see what it’s like up there. I was curious,” explains Eva Perglerová, a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen at Charles University, where she now teaches. It’s this curiosity that fueled her drive to climb the world’s highest peaks.

The Czech team won five medals at the Winter World University Games in Turin, Italy. Hockey players claimed gold, while biathletes Petr Hák and Svatava Mikysková secured silver in the relay. Three bronze medals were also earned.

Charles University on Monday launched Charleston, a new programme backing postdoc research with a focus on sustainability. A total of twenty grants - ten per year over two years - will be available.

“I'm interested, among other things, in how materials mix inside stars that are physically close to one another,” says CU Associate Professor Ondřej Pejcha. He will launch a prestigious ERC Consolidator project worth 2.3 million euros.

Martin Setvín has truly had a great run lately. In 2023 he received an ERC CZ grant for his research on polarons in solids. Last autumn, Science Advances published the latest discoveries by his team. And he capped 2024 with an ERC Consolidator Grant!
